E-Commerce And Cross-Border E-Commerce Roadmap from Leather Producers

İDMİB created a roadmap under 9 titles for Digital Transformation Project. The project also has cross-border e-commerce roadmap.

İstanbul Leather and Leather Products Exporters Association (İDMİB) set the e-commerce and cross-border e-commerce roadmap. Accordingly, new generation sales channels will be effectively positioned at the centre of global commerce. Works on “İDMİB Digital Transformation Project” prepared for this purpose are on-going. A roadmap under 9 titles is created for the project. The project also has cross-border e-commerce roadmap. Digital transformation project that aims to apply new generation marketing steps aim to gather leather manufacturers with foreign buyers in the digital environment.

Highest export in leather products is Germany

According to İstanbul Leather and Leather Products Exporters’ Associations (İDMİB) Chairman Mustafa Şenocak’s statement on the press, 803 million dollars of export was completed in the leather sector between 01 January 2020 and 18 August 2020. Germany is among the highest exporter country. Germany is followed by Russia, Italy, Iraq, Spain, France, England, Holland, Romania and the USA. Leather exporters set the 2020 end targets between 1.4 and 1.5 billion dollars.

According to information provided by Şenocak, the sector reached an increase trend in the export up to 15% since the beginning of this year. The sector broke the monthly and quarterly records on January and February. The decreasing demand and consumption around the world with the new coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic caused a decrease in leather export by more than 40% between March 2020 and August 2020.

Leather and leather product export between 01 January 2020-18 August 2020 was 803 million dollar. As of 18 August, leather export numbers and products since the beginning of the year are as follows:

  • Shoe – 514 million dollars
  • Semi-processed/processed leather and processed fur – 101 million dollars
  • Leathercraft – 100 million dollars
  • Leather and fur confection – 87 million dollar

The sector exports to more than 200 countries. In this period, top ten countries for highest export were Germany, Russia, Italy, Iraq, Spain, France, England, Holland, Romania and the USA.

Digital transformation and cross-border e-commerce roadmap

İDMİB prepared Digital Transformation Project to increase export. The project includes e-commerce and cross-border e-commerce roadmap in the process with travel restrictions. Within this framework, effective use of new generation sales channels and positioning them at the centre of global commerce are expected. İDMİB Digital Transformation Project that continues to work is collected under 9 main titles. In this project, the firms aim for adaptation in the following processes:

  • Three dimensional product modelling
  • Creating online catalogues
  • Digital B2B events
  • Virtual fairs
  • E-commerce and cross-border e-commerce roadmap

The main purpose of the project is to gather İDMİB members and foreign buyers in the digital environment with the web portal created under digital transformation project. The portal will be open for public access for 365 days. Coordination with the Ministry of Commerce and Turkish Exporters’ Association (TİM) will be established to promote the portal around the world.

The project scope includes promotion of the leather sector. İDMİB that realised “the story of Turkish leather, international promotion and collaboration work” project will broadcast 5 promotion movies that will be completed in a short time on all digital platforms. This way, the quality of Turkish leather and leather products and the power of production will become more known and recognisable at global scale.
