WORLDEF Chairman Ömer Nart explained the effect of Brexit on cross-border e-commerce

WORLDEF President Ömer Nart made evaluations about Brexit and the course of the UK market for Turkish cross-border e-commercers before the forum to be held on June 3, 2020.

International cross-border e-commerce platform WORLDEF is organising a “E-Commerce Market in England” forum with the collaboration of British Ministry of Commerce. WORLDEF Chairman Ömer Nart assessed the Brexit and Turkish cross-border e-commerce firms in the British market before World E-Commerce Forum.

WORLDEF, the international cross-border e-commerce platform established to help businesses that want to be involved in cross-border e-commerce in the international markets and guide in the competition organises World E-Commerce Forum event with the collaboration of British Ministry of Commerce. The forum was planned for 15 April but postponed due to precautions for the coronavirus.

WORLDEF Chairman Ömer Nart assessed the possible effects of Brexit on e-commerce before the event. Ömer Nart attracted attention to United Kingdom’s (UK) exit from the European Union (UN) and the effects of coronavirus in the recent months and stated that after the Brexit transition period, new regulations will be formed for cross-border e-commerce and British market offers important advantages for Turkish cross-border e-commerce firms.

England officially left the UK on 31 January 2020. England that follows European Union (UN) norms for international commerce experienced certain ambiguities due to Brexit. Various companies involved in cross-border e-commerce or e-export to England started to wonder about how this new process will impact sales. WORLDEF Chairman assessed the effects of Brexit on cross-border e-commerce in England. Nart stated that World E-Commerce Forum organised by WORLDEF and British Ministry of Commerce on 03 June 2020 will consider Brexit and the new situation caused by the coronavirus.

“Standards of cross-border e-commerce products will change”

Ömer Nars reminded that certain technical regulations and customs regulations will be adjusted in cross-border e-commerce from Turkey to the United Kingdom after the Brexit and the product standards for the British market via cross-border e-commerce might change. Nart stated that, “various firms in Turkey have commercial relationships with firms in England. Our commerce shows an acceleration with cross-border e-commerce in addition to traditional commerce. But Brexit will be the beginning for firms that want to make cross-border e-commerce with England. While the cross-border e-commerce was within EU standards, the rules of the game are changing. I believe that England will take objective and constructive steps in this transformation process.”

“We need to fit the new commercial structure after Brexit.”

Ömer Nart assessed the Brexit and Turkish cross-border e-commerce firms in the British market.

WORLDEF Chairman considered Brexit transition period as a critical processes and said: “There will be some regulations in customs and logistics in the new process. It is important to benefit from Brexit transition period and fit the new commercial structure according to adjustments. There is 10-month period for the transition period to end. We will see the new cross-border e-commerce rules in 2021 in England. It is important for every cross-border e-commerce firms in the British Market to predict this and act accordingly.”

WORDLEF Chairman Nart recommended to firms that aim for cross-border e-commerce in British market that “firms that focus on cross-border e-commerce in England will have to take proactive steps in cross-border e-commerce operations after Brexit. Preparing for this process will decrease disadvantages for cross-border e-commerce companies and create competitive advantage. My advice for cross-border e-commerce firms is to follow the process closely and adapt as fast as they can. Especially logistics and customs processes must be considered. Marketing campaigns should be reviewed. Companies that are flexible and adapt fast to the new cross-border e-commerce regulations will be more advantageous. This way, they can be players in the British market.”

“Brexit and coronavirus will be discussed in World E-Commerce Forum”

Ömer Nart stataed that World E-Commerce Forum organised by WORLDEF and British Ministry of Commerce in İstanbul will be a great opportunity for cross-border e-commerce firms that want to learn the process after Brexit. Ömer Nart explained that the forum main theme that will discuss the new process will be “cross-border e-commerce market in England” and Turkey has become a strong and reliable supplier for England after the coronavirus that emerged in China.

WORLDEF Chairman emphasised that cross-border e-commerce firms will have the chance to listen the new commercial status due to coronavirus and topics relayed to British market from e-commerce experts that come from England and find collaboration chances in the forum organised in İstanbul. Nart added that they are following the post-Brexit process as WORLDEF and they are in contact with British Ministry of Commerce.

England and E-Commerce

England is the sole leader of Europe in e-commerce. England which is the largest e-commerce market in Europe has more online consumers than other EU countries. In 2019, more than 90% of internet users purchased something online (Statista).

What Is Brexit?

After 23 June 2016 referendum, United Kingdom’s desire to leave EU became official in 23 June 2016 and Brexit process started. Negotiations were completed on 14 November 2018 and the process started on 31 January 2020. There will be transition period until 31 December 2020. Until January 2021, UK will still be a EU member in commercial terms. In this period, the country will continue to be in Customs Union with Turkey.
